SUMMARY:Protect Our Places on the Steps of City Hall
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, hundreds of charitable organizations\, community gardens\, and houses of worship are charged improper tax\, water and sewer bills. The city sells this illegally-accrued debt as liens to Wall Street investors each summer. Suddenly\, hundreds of community places like houses of worship\, community gardens\, daycares and more become at risk of having their doors closed by private speculators. Let’s #protectourplaces! \nJoin Council Member Antonio Reynoso and The Protect Our Places Coalition (including 596 Acres\, Progressives Educating New Yorkers\, #EquitableNeighborhoods practice at Community Development Project\,Picture the Homeless and Northwest Bronx Community & Clergy Coalitionand more!) to call for the passage of #ProtectOurPlaces Bill Intro245.  \nWhen our coalition started outreach in February 2018\, 342 active non-profit places had improperly-charged debt heading to the sale. Together\, we have helped 108 places get off the list. These 234 remain at risk: \n \nThis is on top of 284 places put at risk from being included in sales between 2011 and 2017. \nThis rally is on the deadline for places to be removed from the 2018 sale.
