Disaster Assistance Training for Pro Bono Lawyers Assisting Individuals and Families

The City Bar Justice Center, Legal Services NYC, The Legal Aid Society, and the City Bar Committee on Pro Bono and Legal Services will be co-sponsoring a training for attorneys interested in volunteering to provide legal assistance to New York City residents adversely affected by last week’s Tropical Storm Sandy.

The training will prepare volunteer lawyers to participate in disaster assistance clinics and other opportunities to provide legal counseling to affected communities. It will cover FEMA, Insurance, Disaster Unemployment Assistance, Food Stamps, Housing and Landlord & Tenant, Replacement of Documents, Hotline Resources and other issues. The training will be videotaped and available for viewing on ProBonoNet. CLE credit is not offered.

NYLAG presents a disaster relief legal training for pro bono attorneys and other volunteers

On Friday, November 9th, this 90-minute webinar will cover the basics of FEMA and other benefits.

The New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) has mobilized a “Storm Response Unit” to provide disaster relief for storm victims who now face an array of urgent legal issues. In order to handle this huge volume we are turning to our pro bono partners for help. NYLAG will host a training for pro bono attorneys and other interested volunteers via a live webinar on Friday, November 9th from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. The 90-minute training will cover the basics of storm-related legal issues, including:

• An overview of FEMA and other disaster relief programs, including types of available assistance and how to apply • Housing issues, including landlord-tenant disputes, insurance claims and mortgage issues • Accessing new and continuation benefits, including food stamps, public assistance and unemployment benefits • Family law, consumer law and other general issues likely to be faced by storm victims We will also discuss how to volunteer with NYLAG's Storm Response Unit. Pro bono opportunities will include providing assistance alongside NYLAG staff at partner organizations throughout the five boroughs of New York City, Long Island and Westchester, as well as onboard NYLAG's innovative Mobile Legal Help Center, which is traveling into the hardest hit areas.

CLE information: NYLAG is not offering CLE credit for the training, but New York attorneys may receive CLE credit from NYLAG for their time spent volunteering (1 credit for every 2 hours of service, up to 10 credits per biennial cycle).

Legal Services NYC Sandy Recovery Resources

In the past week, LSNYC staff and volunteers have contributed hundreds of hours providing humanitarian and legal help to those in the hardest-hit areas of the City. Our advocates will continue to work in communities around the City to help people access benefits, obtain safe affordable housing and handle other legal issues to help families and our communities recover. Some of the areas in which we can offer assistance are:

- FEMA Applications Advocates can assist individuals with FEMA applications and challenge improper denials when necessary.
- Emergency Benefits We are assisting people in completing Emergency Food Stamp applications and disaster-related Unemployment Insurance applications, and accessing other emergency benefits.
- Employment We can help workers who have lost wages because of storm-related problems access emergency unemployment benefits.
- Housing We are preventing wrongful evictions, advising tenants about rent abatements, obtaining repairs and helping tenants to move/obtain transfers to alternate housing.
- Foreclosure Prevention We are working with homeowners to navigate insurance claims, apply for assistance with home repairs, and negotiate with lenders to prevent foreclosures.
- Economic Recovery We are helping small businesses in locating pro bono resources to address both their immediate and ongoing needs.
- Other Civil Legal Services Many New Yorkers will encounter many other civil legal needs as they continue to recover from the storm. Our advocates and pro-bono partners are available to help on a range of other issues.
