We are thrilled that our friend and collaborator Daniel Eizirik is documenting public vacant lots with 596 Acres this winter. That's his picture above, drawn at 462 Halsey Community Gardens. Through December 21, Daniel will be spending time on sites and drawing. You can see his drawings of 143 Stockholm and 462 Halsey. We will be releasing our collaboration as an artist book called "Lots of Land/Land of Lots" on January 11, 2013. The party will be fun!

This Saturday at 2pm, in conjunction with the exhibition On Purpose, Paula will be on a panel discussing temporary usage models for nontraditional and vacant commercial/industrial space in arts, cultural and civic space programming - Space to Create at the BRIC Rotunda gallery, 33 Clinton Street. Come down and see our work and the work of our collaborators displayed in an art context!

Sunday, December 9 at 2 pm - 596 Acres is holding a Rockaway Community Meeting at 183 Beach 96TH Street. There are projects budding on the 596 Acres platform, and conversations that have started in the last month that we'd love to continue in community. Please join us. Vacant public land is one of our many resources now and the future is bold.

NEWS FROM THE ORGANIZING ACRES

Brooklyn - Winter is around the corner, its time to get our garlic in the ground!  Myrtle Village Green will be planting garlic this Saturday Dec 1, 10 am -- 11 am with Feedback Farms. Join them if you want to learn about planting garlic or just want to help them plant. Learn about Allium Sativum and winter crops in general!

Brooklyn - 100 Quincy Community Garden is moving along on the path to getting access to their lot! They will be presenting at the next community board 3 meeting, Dec. 3, 6pm at the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, 1368 Fulton Street. Come down and show your support! If you've never been a community board meeting, this will be an education. 
 
Rockaway, Queens - Culinary Kids is working in community on the 596 Acres platform pop up reuse and warming tent at Beach 58th Street and Beach Channel Drive; the site will transition to an agriculture and aquaculture in spring. Save the date for a tent-raising on Saturday, December 8th.

Lower East Side, Manhattan - Siempre Verde, 596 Acres' first Manhattan lot, has the keys to their lot. The Sandy waters have receeded and the group is readying the ground for spring! Join them!

Check out our updated Green For Your Green page - it lists the grants below, plus others with longer deadlines, and sources for free materials.  

Love Your Block Grants Citizens Committee, in partnership with the City of New York, awards grants of $1000 to volunteer-led community groups seeking to beautify their neighborhoods. Selected groups also benefit from receiving special services from the Departments of Transportation, Sanitation, and Parks & Recreation. Our 2013 application is now available. Deadline: November 30, 2012 (TOMORROW).

National Gardening Association Youth Garden Grants.  Five winners will receive gift cards valued at $1,000, and 95 winners will receive $500 gift cards, to purchase gardening materials and supplies from their local Home Depot store specific to the needs of their program.  Deadline: December 3, 2012.

Home Depot is offering sweat equity grants up to $5000 to organizations using the power of volunteers to improve the physical health of their community. Grants are given in the form of the Home Depot gift cards usable for the purchase of tools, materials, or services. Accepting proposals for grants from November 12, 2012 through December 12, 2012.

Fiskars’ Project Orange Thumb Community Garden Grants: Ten applicants will receive $5,000 in cash and tools for neighborhood beautification, community collaboration, and healthy, sustainable food sources; and one applicant will receive a complete garden makeover. Nonprofit organizations in the US are eligible to apply.  Deadline: December 15, 2012.

***Note that many grants require 501(c)(3) status or a fiscal sponsor. If your group or organization doesn't have 501(c)(3) status, IOBY.org is a great local option for fiscal sponsorship.
